Dear
Brother Knights,
I hope that everyone has gotten a good start in 2008.
It’s seems like yesterday we were all worried about Y2K and here it is
approaching a decade latter. Any remaining problems with my computer
can easily be attributed to operator error and not some nefarious
intergalactic glitch.
Last month our DGK Rich Kovaleski and I had the
pleasure of attending the State Midyear meeting in Newport News
Virginia. As usual much of the discussion focused on recruitment. One of the more interesting presentations came
from our Worthy Field Agent, Jim Bertine. I have to confess it has been a while since I
have read the back of the form 100. I would like to think that most of
you read it regularly. Ji m wisely pointed
out that the back of the form 100 lists six strong reasons to become a
Knight. If you are uncomfortable talking about the Knights let your
friends, neighbors, associates read the back of the application. It
could convince them to fill out and sign the front.
At the meeting we were also provided our KOVAR
supplies for this year. KOVAR is rapidly approaching
(April 17-20). As you know this is a labor
intensive event so please reserve some time to work for “God’s Special
Children”.
April 19th of that same week-end is our Casino night event. This is a fun evening but it can only be
successful if we sell a lot of tickets in advance and get a lot of
players in the door.
As you
are aware we have initiated an “Attendance Kitty’’ in the Council. The
Council puts up $10 a meeting and if your name is drawn and you are
there, you win. If you are not at the meeting and your name is drawn,
you lose out and the 410 rolls over to the next meeting. Unfortunately,
the winners of the last several drawings were not present and the Kitty
is up to $70. If you haven’t been to a meeting for a while, how about
coming out for one. It could be very
profitable for you.
The
State Bowling Tournament will begin April 5-6 in Norfolk, VA. Entries close March 1. The International
Association has made some rule changes allowing for up to two non
Knight bowlers per team. (I guess they want to allow for ringers). The Virginia State Tournament encourages that all bowlers be Knights.
I hope
that this Newsletter reaches you before our February 9th Sweetheart/Anniversary dinner because I certainly want to
express my sincere appreciation and admiration to Al Grimmig and Joe
Beres for their work on the dinner. It should be a great night and I hope to see
as many of you as possible.
A few
weeks ago, out Worthy Lecturer, Steve Munchak reminded the Council that
the Knights of Columbus has an opening and closing Ode, which, is
called for in the official Knight of Columbus, “Method of Conducting a
Council Meeting”. Many Councils sing the
Ode at their meetings but we have historically skipped over that
requirement. I’d like to provide the
lyrics of the Ode to you”
Opening Ode:
Sing ye his praises loud and long,
And let the unenlightened
know,
In ev’ry echo of your song,
The great deeds done, tho’
long ago,
By Columbus of the valiant
soul,
Who first old Neptune has
controlled,
Despite of envy, intrigue,
gold,
In dim past of long ago.
With vessels three o’er
stormy sea,
He thrilled the world of long
ago,
While wisdom linked with
destiny,
In justice scales its weight did throw.
We are his heirs; we wear his
name;
We boast his deeds; we spread
his fame;
Our order is the shining flame,
That lights the gloom of long
age.
Closing Ode:
Air: “America”
Now our evening’s work is done,
Then let us ev’ry one,
Join in a song.
Long may our order stand
Foremost in this free land,
Ready with our heart and hand
To right each wrong.
We have a mission great,
True to our Church and State,
Onward we move.
We dry the mourner’s tear,
The tired heart we cheer,
Faith in our works appear,
Upheld by love
I just thought I would pass the words of the Ode along.
Steve, who has done a fantastic job as Lecturer, provided
the words a few weeks ago and I wanted to pass them to the entire
Council.
Have a
great month and stay warm.
Fraternally,
Andrew
