Grand Knight's Letter

Dear Brother Knights,

I hope that everyone has gotten a good start in 2008. It’s seems like yesterday we were all worried about Y2K and here it is approaching a decade latter. Any remaining problems with my computer can easily be attributed to operator error and not some nefarious intergalactic glitch.

Last month our DGK Rich Kovaleski and I had the pleasure of attending the State Midyear meeting in Newport News Virginia. As usual much of the discussion focused on recruitment.  One of the more interesting presentations came from  our Worthy Field Agent, Jim Bertine.  I have to confess it has been a while since I have read the back of the form 100. I would like to think that most of you read it regularly.  Ji m wisely pointed out that the back of the form 100 lists six strong reasons to become a Knight. If you are uncomfortable talking about the Knights let your friends, neighbors, associates read the back of the application. It could convince them to fill out and sign the front.

At the meeting we were also provided our KOVAR supplies for this year. KOVAR is rapidly approaching   (April 17-20). As you know this is a labor intensive event so please reserve some time to work for “God’s Special Children”.

April 19th of that same week-end is our Casino night event.  This is a fun evening but it can only be successful if we sell a lot of tickets in advance and get a lot of players in the door.

As you are aware we have initiated an “Attendance Kitty’’ in the Council. The Council puts up $10 a meeting and if your name is drawn and you are there, you win. If you are not at the meeting and your name is drawn, you lose out and the 410 rolls over to the next meeting. Unfortunately, the winners of the last several drawings were not present and the Kitty is up to $70. If you haven’t been to a meeting for a while, how about coming out for one.  It could be very profitable for you.

The State Bowling Tournament will begin April 5-6 in Norfolk, VA.  Entries close March 1. The International Association has made some rule changes allowing for up to two non Knight bowlers per team. (I guess they want to allow for ringers).  The Virginia State Tournament encourages that  all bowlers be Knights.

I hope that this Newsletter reaches you before our February 9th Sweetheart/Anniversary dinner because I certainly want to express my sincere appreciation and admiration to Al Grimmig and Joe Beres for  their work on the dinner.  It should be a great night and I hope to see as many of you as possible.

A few weeks ago, out Worthy Lecturer, Steve Munchak reminded the Council that the Knights of Columbus has an opening and closing Ode, which, is called for in the official Knight of Columbus, “Method of Conducting a Council Meeting”.  Many Councils sing the Ode at their meetings but we have historically skipped over that requirement.  I’d like to provide the lyrics of the Ode to you”

 Opening Ode:

Sing ye his praises loud and long,
And let the unenlightened know,
In ev’ry echo of your song,
The great deeds done, tho’ long ago,
By Columbus of the valiant soul,
Who first old Neptune has controlled,
Despite of envy, intrigue, gold,
In dim past of long ago.
With vessels three o’er stormy sea,
He thrilled the world of long ago,
While wisdom linked with destiny,

In justice scales its weight did throw.
We are his heirs; we wear his name;
We boast his deeds; we spread his fame;
Our order is the shining flame,
That lights the gloom of long age.

Closing Ode:

Air: “America”
Now our evening’s work is done,
Then let us ev’ry one,
Join in a song.
Long may our order stand
Foremost in this free land,
Ready with our heart and hand
To right each wrong.
We have a mission great,
True to our Church and State,
Onward we move.
We dry the mourner’s tear,
The tired heart we cheer,
Faith in our works appear,
Upheld by love

I just thought I would pass the words of the Ode along. Steve, who has done a fantastic job as Lecturer,  provided the words a few weeks ago and I wanted to pass them to the entire Council.

Have a great month and stay warm.

Fraternally,
Andrew J. Garlichs, Grand Knight

Knights of Columbus Insurance

Founder's Mission Focus on New Ads

The March issue of Columbia magazine features an ad that cuts to the heart of the Knights of Columbus insurance program. In 1882, when Father Michael J. McGivney began our organization, his primary concern was the care of widows and orphans.  Even though 125 years have passed, we should never forget his mission.

As you can imagine, the Order gets lots of correspondence, but every now and then a letter or e-mail stands out from the rest.  That is what happened back in October when the widow of a member wrote to the Supreme Council.

While the name of the person writing has been changed to protect her privacy, the letter appears nearly word for word.  This is what she said:

      Dear Supreme Knight

When my husband became a Knight, we were introduced to our insurance agent, Mike Walther.  We could sense right away that he thought his career as more of a "ministry" than a sales position.  Little did I know then how much his sense of ministry would mean to me.

During our meetings, we weren't easy to persuade.  Never willing to give up, Mike worked to show us that we had a need, and he was able to help us understand the value of being protected with life insurance.

My husband died suddenly last fall.  His death was a shock to everyone.  Although from a medical standpoint it shouldn't have happened, I guest God felt his work on Earth was done.  Mike was there for me immediately.  He was at the wake and the funeral, and then, stayed by my side and helped with whatever I needed.  He cried for my husband just like I did.

I think that in this world where everyone is focused on the bottom line, I saw what the Knights are truly about.  They were there for me when I needed them the most.

     Beverly Buchanan

One Life Lost.  One Life continues.  One chance to help.  A strong shoulder there when she needs it the most.

The choice of what happens after we're gone is ours.  When my life here ends, I want someone I know and trust to be there to help my family, to console them, and, yes, to cry with them.

Your Knights of Columbus agent will do that.  The man, and the organization, will be there for her.  That's a comfort that I can't get anywhere else.

If I were you, I would call your agent today.  I stand shoulder to shoulder to help my Brother Knights.  Memento Mori -- Time flies, Remember death.

God bless you,
Jim
